In May 2026, when the EU’s new Environmental Crime Directive is implemented in member states, the most serious offences will become punishable within the EU – but this only applies to the EU.

Mass environmental destruction can be made a crime within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. Representatives from business and unions discuss the need for fair and long-term rules.
